“Human beings are the only animals who have to work, and I think that is the most ridiculous thing in the world. Other animals make their livings by living, but people work like crazy, thinking that they have to in order to stay alive. The bigger the job, the greater the challenge, the more wonderful they think it is. It would be good to give up that way of thinking and live an easy, comfortable life with plenty of free time. I think that the way animals live in the tropics, stepping outside in the morning and evening to see if there is something to eat, and taking a long nap in the afternoon, must be a wonderful life. For human beings, a life of such simplicity would be possible if one worked to produce directly his daily necessities. In such a life, work is not work as people generally think of it, but simply doing what needs to be done.”

I do agree that we need to consider our motivations and choices concerning our mental and physical well being and how it is affected by our over-productive lifestyle, as well as its obvious affects on the earth and all its creatures, but this passage is missing a few major points that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Wild animals certainly work their entire day away. There are very few if any animals in the wild that have such a wonderful lazy life as exemplified above. Consider the work it takes to find food, constantly - the work to find a safe place to sleep and keep your family, if even only for a few hours - if you’re a meat eating animal, the work to hunt your food that could take most of a day - and now, with the ever expanding human population, the work to find a new home or avoid being killed by those humans.

Humans work so that we don’t have to live like animals. Not to say that we still don’t live or act like wild animals, because I’m firm that we do all the horrible things we do because we still possess the fight or flight mechanisms of a wild animal, but now we have invented convenience. The reason we work is to maintain these conveniences born out of work, such as not needing to find, grow or steal your food - you can buy it from someone who did it for you. I’m not necessarily stating any of this with pride mind you, but rather as a way of trying to validate work. Yes, we invented “human” work and we take it for granted, abuse it and use it to take advantage of our fellow humans, but human work does have its positives.

Without human work, how would Masanobu Fukuoka (pictured above) be able to see without the help of someone or more likely many someones who worked to make his glasses?
